Role

Builds the model from captured imagery and LiDAR data

Repairs and refines a model Terra has already built

Input

Drone imagery, LiDAR data, multispectral captures

A mesh or point cloud produced by DJI Terra

Core capability

Photogrammetry, LiDAR processing, 3D Gaussian Splatting

Mesh defect repair, point cloud smoothing and classification

Works standalone

Yes, Terra doesn't require Modify to function

No, Modify's own product page describes it as part of the Terra and Enterprise drone workflow

Typical use

Producing the initial reconstructed model

Removing floating objects, holes and vehicles from that model before it's shared

DJI Terra Builds the Model, DJI Modify Refines It

DJI Terra takes drone-captured imagery and LiDAR data and reconstructs it into an orthomosaic, a textured 3D mesh, a point cloud or a 3D Gaussian Splat, the reconstruction stage of the workflow. Whatever comes out of that process, however clean or messy, is the starting point DJI Modify works from, not a separate capture of its own.

DJI Modify's own product page describes it plainly as DJI's first intelligent 3D model editing software, built for refining what's already been reconstructed rather than reconstructing anything itself. It performs rapid point cloud smoothing, noise reduction and downsampling, one-click adjustment of point cloud categories, and automatic terrain result generation.

Mesh Repair Is DJI Modify's Clearest Job

Mesh Repair Is DJI Modify's Clearest Job

DJI Modify's own feature description states it identifies and repairs 3D mesh defects, floating objects, holes and vehicles caught mid-reconstruction, with a single click, producing realistic textures as part of that repair. DJI Terra doesn't do this kind of touch-up work at all, its job ends once the initial reconstruction is complete, however clean or messy that output turns out to be.

For a model that's going straight to a client, a planning submission or a public-facing viewer, that gap matters. A reconstructed mesh with a parked vehicle baked into the surface, or a hole where photogrammetry couldn't resolve a tricky angle, is a Terra-and-Modify job together, Terra alone leaves that defect in the final output.

Neither Product Replaces the Other

DJI Terra works entirely on its own, a business processing straightforward sites with clean captures and no need for cosmetic touch-ups doesn't need DJI Modify at all. DJI Modify, by contrast, doesn't work on its own, its own product page frames it as delivering a complete solution only when integrated with DJI Enterprise drones and DJI Terra, there's no standalone capture-to-model workflow through Modify by itself.

That makes this less a choice between two products and more a question of whether a Terra output regularly needs cleaning up before it's fit to share. A construction, public safety or asset inspection workflow where visual presentation quality matters is where Modify earns its cost on top of Terra; a workflow where the raw reconstruction is already good enough has less use for it.

Choosing Between DJI Terra Alone and DJI Terra Plus Modify

A business processing sites with clean captures, minimal obstructions and no need for a polished, presentation-ready finish gets full use out of DJI Terra on its own. A business regularly producing models for clients, planning submissions or public-facing use, where a stray vehicle, a hole in the mesh or a rough texture reflects badly on the finished work, gets real value from adding DJI Modify to that same workflow.

Drone Safe Store carries DJI Terra and DJI Modify directly as an official DJI Enterprise partner, either as separate annual licences or as a bundled permanent purchase, with genuine UK stock, fast-tracked shipping and iwocaPay financing available across both.
