DJI Dock 4 and Matrice 5TD
Dock 4 swaps in a fully charged battery in 25 seconds from dock cover closure to battery insertion, with the aircraft back in the air inside a 45-second total turnaround, against the 27-minute charge cycle every dock before it has run. Paired exclusively with the Matrice 5TD, built for power line and pipeline inspection, public safety response and long-range night operation, this combo is open for order now as DJI's current flagship docked platform.
Battery-Swap Charging
A swap triggers only when the difference between the depleted battery and the highest-charged battery exceeds 10% and that highest battery sits above 90%, timed to the aircraft landing, before a scheduled operation starts, or one hour ahead of an automated mission. The dock charges two batteries from separate sets simultaneously, 15% to 95% in 27 minutes, and holds up to three batteries across four compartments ready to rotate in. Wireless charging is supported as a backup path only, taking two hours to reach 95% from below 90%, not the primary charging method.
Flight Performance
Maximum flight time runs to 59 minutes, with 48 minutes as the practical operating figure once reserve margins are accounted for. FlyTo speed reaches 21 m/s, covering a target 3km away in under 3 minutes, relevant directly to a first-response or security dispatch where the first minutes decide what's captured on arrival. Operating radius holds at 10km with a 53km maximum flight distance, and payload capacity sits at 450g, enough for any one of the three accessories DJI builds for this aircraft.
Camera System
Four imaging modules sit on the gimbal: a wide-angle camera (1/0.98" CMOS, 50MP, f/1.8, 23.5mm equivalent), a medium telephoto (1/1.28" CMOS, 50MP, f/2.88, 3x optical, 70mm equivalent), a super telephoto (1/1.5" CMOS, 50MP, f/2.8, 11x optical up to 176x hybrid zoom), and an infrared thermal camera (1280×1024 native resolution, super-resolution up to 2560×2048, f/0.85, 53mm equivalent). A laser rangefinder reads out to 3km at ±(50cm + 0.1% × distance) accuracy, and a near-infrared laser illuminator supports night vision for covert operations. The super telephoto's upgraded RYYB sensor reads a license plate from 400 metres away, and the wide and telephoto cameras fire together in a single shutter action rather than one view at a time.
Night Performance
Three layers compound to lift low-light capability over the Matrice 4TD: an upgraded wide camera sensor and a 30%-higher-light-intake RYYB telephoto sensor, a 16x more powerful NPU merging frames at up to 20Hz for 4K night video, and a noise reduction algorithm pushing maximum night-mode ISO to 1,638,400, 2 to 4 times the 4TD's ceiling. RYYB replaces the standard green filter with a yellow one that passes both green and red light, so each telephoto pixel captures more photons and holds a cleaner image in low light than a standard RGB sensor.
Mapping Accuracy
The Matrice 5TD's CMOS sensor runs smaller than the Matrice 4D's (13.1×9.8mm against 17.3×13.0mm) and uses an electronic rolling shutter rather than the 4D's mechanical shutter, a trade DJI offsets with a 16x more powerful processing chip and an optimised Terra SDK algorithm that compensates for the accuracy gap, merging each 50MP capture down to 12MP for more accurate aerial triangulation colouring. Flying nadir or oblique mapping missions at 120m altitude, non-terrain-following, and capturing 12MP images, the Matrice 5TD holds an aerial triangulation check-point accuracy around 10cm.
Obstacle Sensing and Flight Safety
Six full-colour obstacle-sensing cameras run as standard, built into the airframe rather than sold as a mounted accessory, and the aircraft stops automatically before reaching a power line rather than relying on the pilot to react in time. A real-time altitude alert fires instantly if the aircraft exceeds its set limit. The AP1 parachute, validated through more than 45 deployment tests in hovering and full-speed flight, weighs 107g, needs a minimum 35m AGL to deploy, cuts terminal descent velocity to 6 m/s or below, and connects directly to the aircraft's high-speed USB-C port; it needs no factory inspection for three years if its self-tests pass, but must be replaced as a new unit after any deployment. The Flight Termination System is built into the Matrice 5TD airframe as standard, with no separate module to install, and requires at least one 4G SIM card to operate. Dock 4 and the Matrice 5TD carry an EU-Type Examination Certificate covering Class C5 and C6 UAS operation under Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/945.
Connectivity
The DJI O4 Ground Station lifts RTK, transmission and storage modules clear of ground-level obstructions, extending range to 40km with five satellite systems and 19 frequencies for anti-interference positioning. It runs four modes from one station: Dock Access Mode for a first O4 paired to Dock 4, Roaming Base Station Mode to add a second O4 and extend coverage, Simplified Dock Mode for third-party Matrice 400 docks, and Relay Mode to extend range without an internet connection. The Matrice 5TD carries a built-in dual 4G dongle with SIM1, SIM2 and SD card slots for enhanced transmission alongside the O4 link, and video is encoded in H.265 onboard and streamed direct to the cloud, cutting sky-to-screen latency to 160ms. Sub-2GHz transmission is available by region (United States, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Chinese Mainland, Taiwan at launch) and requires activation with a liability acknowledgement.
