DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro: 1/1.3-Inch Sensor With 4-Hour Battery Life

The Osmo Action 5 Pro pairs a 1/1.3-inch sensor with 2.4μm pixels and a 4nm chip, delivering 13.5 stops of dynamic range and clean footage in conditions that defeat smaller-sensor action cameras. A single battery runs for up to four hours, or 3.6 hours at minus 20°C.

It was also the first DJI action camera with subject tracking, keeping a moving subject centred in frame without a gimbal.

Image Quality

  • Capture 13.5 stops of dynamic range from the 1/1.3-inch sensor, holding highlight and shadow detail through sunrises and city nights
  • Shoot 4K/60fps HDR, balancing bright sky against shadowed ground without blowing out
  • Switch to SuperNight mode, where AI noise reduction produces cleaner footage in very low light
  • Record 4K/120fps in 4:3 at full-pixel 3840 x 2880, giving room to crop to horizontal or vertical afterwards
  • Take roughly 40MP stills at 7294 x 5472, or 8K in 16:9, around four times the detail of the previous generation
  • Grade with 10-bit D-Log M and 10-bit HLG, previewing colour recovery directly on the screens

Subject Tracking

Subject tracking detects where the subject sits in frame and adjusts composition dynamically to keep them centred, working in both horizontal and vertical orientation. On an action camera with no gimbal, that means usable framing from a chest mount or a fixed position while you concentrate on the activity.

Stabilisation

RockSteady 3.0 smooths shake while retaining the sense of motion that makes first-person footage feel immersive. HorizonSteady goes further, correcting horizontal tilt across a full 360° range, which holds the horizon level through rolls and rotations.

Super Slow Motion

The 4nm chip supports up to 32x slow motion with 4x frame interpolation and frame-by-frame analysis. Recording runs at 1080p/240fps, with post-processing to an effective 960fps.

Screens

Front and rear OLED touchscreens with the rear reaching 1000 nits peak brightness, readable in direct sun. Larger screens and thinner bezels lift the screen-to-body ratio by 16%.

Tempered glass handles knocks, and an anti-fingerprint coating keeps touch response working when the screen is wet. Always On Display shows recording duration and settings at low power, useful at night without a bright screen ruining your night vision.

Water and Cold

Waterproof to 20 metres with no case, powered on with a single button. A built-in colour temperature sensor corrects underwater colour, and paired with Vivid Underwater in the Mimo app produces more natural results without a red filter.

The pressure gauge records real-time depth and altitude, and automatically starts recording on entering the water and stops on exiting.

Cold performance holds up to 3.6 hours of recording at minus 20°C, which covers a full ski day rather than one run.

Storage and Audio

47GB of internal storage means the camera works straight out of the box, with a microSD slot for more. Audio connects directly to DJI microphone transmitters via OsmoAudio, so a Mic Mini 2 or Mic 3 transmitter pairs without carrying a receiver.

Accessories

Action 5 Pro or Action 6?

Choose the Action 5 Pro to save around £74. It keeps the 1/1.3-inch sensor, 13.5 stops, four-hour battery, subject tracking, 47GB storage, and 20m waterproofing. For most riders, skiers, and divers it does everything needed.

Choose the Action 6 if you want the variable f/2.0 to f/4.0 aperture, the larger 1/1.1-inch square sensor, 4K Custom crop-later mode, in-camera 4K HorizonSteady, and 50GB storage.

The Osmo Nano is worth a look if size matters most, and the Osmo 360 if you want spherical capture with reframing in post.=

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep can it go underwater?

20 metres with no case at all. A colour temperature sensor corrects underwater colour, and the built-in pressure gauge records depth and starts recording automatically when it enters the water.

How long does the battery actually last?

Up to four hours on a single Extreme Battery Plus, and up to 3.6 hours at minus 20°C. That is roughly 50% more than the Action 4.

What is subject tracking?

The camera detects where the subject sits in frame and adjusts composition to keep them centred, in both horizontal and vertical orientation. It works without a gimbal, which is useful for chest mounts and fixed positions.

Standard or Adventure Combo?

The Adventure Combo adds two extra batteries, the multifunctional battery case, and a 1.5m extension rod for £80 more. Those cost more than £80 bought separately, so it is the better value for full-day use.

Do I need a memory card?

Not to start. 47GB of internal storage is built in. A microSD card is worth adding for 4K/120fps, which fills space quickly.

Can I connect a microphone?

Yes. DJI microphone transmitters connect directly via OsmoAudio, so no receiver is needed.

Is it worth paying more for the Action 6?

Only if the variable aperture and crop-later 4K Custom mode matter to you. The Action 5 Pro keeps the large sensor, four-hour battery, subject tracking, and 20m waterproofing at £74 less.

Does it come with a warranty?

Yes. All new, sealed DJI products from Drone Safe Store carry a full 24-month warranty. DJI Care Refresh is available from £18 for accidental damage cover.
