Osmo Action 5 Pro vs. Osmo Action 4

Osmo Action 5 Pro vs. Osmo Action 4

Is the Osmo Action 5 Pro Worth the Upgrade?

When it comes to their individual specs, there are some key differences. DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro was introduced to the world back in September of this year, whereas the Osmo Action 4 was launched in August of 2023. It’ll be interesting to look into the progress made in the past year, and how far the camera technology has been developed.

Physical Specs and Body Features

Typically a camera’s desired features allow for easy transportation and travel, as well as achieving the perfect content.

The original Osmo Action 4 is lightweight and compact, with external dimensions of 70.5 x 44.2 x 32.8 mm and weighs 145 g (including batteries).

DJI Osmo Action 5 has external dimensions of 70.5 x 44.2 x 32.8 mm and weighs 146 g (including batteries).

As you can tell, the dims are the same for both models, however, the DJI Osmo Action 4 is 1g lighter than the DJI Osmo Action 5, but this is unlikely to make much of a difference when it comes to convenience and travelling with your camera.

Sensor Comparison

The DJI Osmo Action 5 features a 40MP 1/1.3-inch sensor, while the Osmo Action 4 has a 10MP sensor of the same size.

This gives the Action 5 a 30MP advantage, allowing for larger prints and more cropping flexibility. Having said that, resolution alone doesn't determine image quality - optical elements, pixel size, and sensor technology also play key roles in the final image.

Lens Spec

The DJI Osmo Action 5 and Osmo Action 4 both have 12.7mm f/2.8 prime lenses, offering identical focal lengths and light-gathering capabilities. Both cameras provide wide-angle coverage at 12mm with a maximum aperture of f/2.8.

Image Stability

The Action 5 offers advanced stabilisation with RockSteady, RockSteady+, and HorizonSteady, while the Action 4 features basic stabilisation (RockSteady).

Storage

The Action 5 comes with 47GB of built-in storage, while the Action 4 lacks internal storage and relies entirely on microSD cards.

Water Resistance

The Action 5 is more robust, with a case-free waterproofing depth of 20m (compared to 18m for the Action 4), and can go as deep as 60m with a dive case.

Durability

Osmo Action 5 has a wider operating temperature range, from -20°C to 45°C, making it more suitable for extreme environments compared to Action 4.

To Sum Up

In conclusion, we can see that both cameras provide excellent imagery - they’re very similar in their specs and the quality of content produced. However, the Osmo Action 5 Pro has come out on top due to its edge in resolution, battery life, and durability - making it a more versatile option for adventurous users and those seeking higher video quality.
