DJI AP100 Parachute
DJI's first parachute system for the Matrice 400, and the component that unlocks flight over populated areas and beyond visual line of sight. Rear-mounted, 935g, deploys in under 600ms, and brings descent below 5 m/s. Runs on its own power, its own flight controller, and its own sensors, entirely independent of the aircraft.
What It Unlocks
Fitting an AP100 to an existing Matrice 400 brings the aircraft up to the operational safety requirements for:
- UK CAA UK5, supporting STS-01: visual line of sight flight over populated urban areas.
- UK CAA UK6, supporting STS-02: beyond visual line of sight operations.
- EASA C5 and C6, the European equivalents.
Declared compliance covers MOC 2511 and MOC 2512, with ASTM F3322 certification for parachute system performance.
For most operators this is the point: it's not a nice-to-have safety accessory, it's the route to airspace you otherwise can't work in, without buying a different aircraft.
How It Works
Under 600ms from trigger to deployment. An independent Flight Termination System cuts motor power first, stopping the rotors before the parachute ejects so the lines cannot tangle with the propellers.
Descent below 5 m/s once the canopy is open, slowing the aircraft enough to meaningfully reduce ground risk.
Completely independent of the aircraft. Its own flight controller, its own IMU sensors, and dual built-in capacitors giving up to an hour of backup power. It does not draw from the Matrice 400's battery and does not need an active E-Port connection, so it keeps monitoring attitude and stays ready to deploy even if the aircraft loses power entirely.
Cross-validated to prevent false deployment. The parachute's own sensors continuously compare data against the aircraft's, which is what stops a single faulty reading firing the canopy mid-mission.
Deployment Options
- Automatic, triggered by the parachute's own anomaly detection.
- Manual, by the pilot.
- Remote, through the Flight Termination System page in DJI FlightHub 2 using the aircraft serial number.
Minimal Operational Compromise
- 935g including the bracket, preserving the Matrice 400's 15.8kg maximum takeoff weight.
- Roughly 6 minutes off flight time, so 59 minutes becomes around 53.
- Rear-mounted, leaving battery swaps unobstructed.
- Fits the standard Matrice 400 carrying case, so no separate transport case is needed.
- Works with existing payloads, no need to change your camera or sensor configuration.
After a Deployment
An audible alarm and blinking light run for approximately an hour to help locate the aircraft, and can be switched off using the physical button on the parachute unit itself.
Health Monitoring
From power-on and throughout the flight, the AP100 monitors its own gas generator and communication links. Any anomaly raises a real-time alert through the Health Management System in DJI Pilot 2, so a fault is visible before take-off rather than discovered when the system is needed.
Before You Buy
It is single-use. Once deployed, the unit must be replaced before the next flight. Budget for a replacement as an operational cost, not a one-off purchase.
DJI recommends retirement after three years. Regardless of self-check results, DJI advises replacing the unit three years after activation. Factor that into the total cost of a compliance programme.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does fitting an AP100 mean I can fly over people straight away?
It brings the aircraft up to the UK5 and C5 operational safety requirements, which is the hardware side. You'll still need the appropriate operational authorisation and a compliant Operating Safety Case. Our team can point you toward the right route.
Which aircraft does it fit?
The DJI Matrice 400 only. For the Matrice 4D and 4TD, the AVSS parachute system is the equivalent.
How much flight time do I lose?
Approximately 6 minutes, so a typical 59-minute flight becomes around 53.
Can it deploy by accident?
The design specifically guards against it. An independent flight controller and IMU cross-validate against the aircraft's own data continuously, so a single anomalous reading won't trigger deployment.
What happens if the aircraft loses power completely?
Dual capacitors provide up to an hour of independent backup power, so attitude monitoring and automatic deployment stay active without the aircraft's battery or an E-Port connection.
Do I need a new one after every deployment?
Yes. It's a single-use system, and DJI also recommends replacement three years after activation regardless of use.
What warranty comes with it?
| Component | Warranty |
|---|---|
| Main Body | 24 Months |
| Other Accessories | No Warranty |
Can I get this on finance?
Ltd companies can access iwocaPay financing, and individual buyers can use Klarna or Clearpay at checkout.
