A guard walking a perimeter covers one point at a time and sees what is at eye level. An aircraft covers the whole boundary in minutes, sees in the dark, and gets to the far corner of a site before anyone could drive there. On a large site that changes what a small team can realistically protect.
PERIMETER AND SITE
Covering ground a patrol cannot
Fixed CCTV sees where it is pointed and nowhere else, and the gaps between cameras are exactly where people go. An aircraft flies the whole boundary, looks over walls and stacked material, and reaches the far side of a compound in the time it takes to start a vehicle.
DJI Dock 3 with a Matrice 4TD at £16,795 flies scheduled patrol routes unattended through DJI FlightHub 2, launching, flying and returning without anyone on site. That suits sites where the cost is travel and staffing rather than the patrol itself, and it produces consistent coverage at three in the morning as reliably as at nine in the evening.
For crewed operation, the Matrice 4T at £5,910 runs visible, thermal and telephoto sensors simultaneously with AI detection of people and vehicles, 112x hybrid zoom and 49 minutes of endurance.

Situational awareness above a crowd
A control room watching a crowd from ground level sees the front row. From above, density, flow, pinch points and the beginnings of a crush are all visible early enough to act on.
The Mavic 3 Thermal at £4,839 deploys in minutes from a vehicle and combines thermal with 56x hybrid zoom, which suits temporary deployments where an aircraft is going up for a few hours rather than living on site. Larger events benefit from the Matrice 4T and its AI detection.

RURAL AND ESTATE
Protecting land, plant and livestock
Rural crime is dispersed, mobile and happens where nobody is watching. Machinery theft, fly tipping, hare coursing, poaching and unauthorised access all take place across ground that takes an hour to drive and minutes to fly.
Thermal is what makes this work. The Mavic 3 Thermal at £4,839 finds people and vehicles against cold fields at night, and the Matrice 4TD at £7,395 adds an IP55 airframe rated from -30°C to 50°C for the conditions this work actually happens in.

INCIDENT RESPONSE
Seeing a situation before committing people
The first question in any incident is what is actually happening, and the answer usually costs somebody a walk toward it. Thermal and zoom imagery from a safe distance answers it without that exposure.
The Matrice 400 with a Zenmuse H30T at £10,560 provides 1280 x 1024 thermal, 34x optical zoom and a 3,000 m laser rangefinder, with 59 minutes of endurance to hold station while a situation develops. DJI FlightHub 2 streams the feed to a control room so decisions are made by people with the full picture rather than relayed descriptions.

SURVEILLANCE LAW
The compliance side nobody sells you
Aerial security is surveillance, and surveillance is regulated. The CAA governs the airspace. The Information Commissioner's Office governs the data, and it is the ICO that most security operators overlook.
Any camera capturing identifiable people is processing personal data under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. The ICO draws no distinction between capturing someone deliberately and capturing them incidentally, so everyone in frame counts, not just the subject you were interested in.
The ICO's own checklist for drone operators sets out what it expects:
- A Data Protection Impact Assessment covering the risks of recording at altitude and of capturing footage of people who were never the focus of the surveillance
- A documented justification for using a drone at all, showing you considered whether other methods would solve the problem
- CAA registration where the aircraft falls within the criteria
- Robust written policies and procedures, with trained operators holding documented credentials
LIMITATIONS
What aerial security will not do
It does not replace guarding or response. An aircraft detects, verifies and evidences. It does not intervene, detain, or lock a gate. Deployed as a force multiplier alongside a team it works well. Deployed as a replacement for one it leaves you watching a crime you cannot stop.
Endurance creates gaps. Even a Dock 3 running scheduled patrols is on the ground between sorties and while charging. Anyone planning around continuous aerial coverage should understand where the gaps fall and what covers them.
Weather grounds flights. IP55 handles rain and wind within limits, but there are nights when nothing goes up. A security plan depending solely on the aircraft has a hole in it on exactly those nights.
Thermal detects, it does not identify. A heat signature tells you someone is there. Establishing who, and gathering evidence that stands up, needs the zoom camera, adequate light, and a sensible expectation about what is achievable at distance in darkness.
Audio broadcast is not audio recording. DJI speakers transmit. They do not record, and recording audio in a surveillance context is heavily restricted and rarely proportionate. Do not let anyone assume otherwise.

AI subject detection
On-board recognition of people, vehicles and boats in real time, so an operator is alerted to a subject rather than watching a feed hoping to spot one.

Long-range zoom

A 15W speaker at 114 dB with a 300 m effective range, for issuing a live challenge or a recorded warning without a person approaching.

Endurance
Up to 54 minutes airborne, long enough to cover a full perimeter circuit and hold station over an incident.
