DJI RS 4 Mini: Compact Gimbal With Auto Axis Locks and 2kg Payload
The DJI RS 4 Mini carries a 2kg payload in a compact body, handling a Sony A7 series body with a 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens, vlog cameras such as the Sony ZV series, or a smartphone with the Phone Holder. Second-generation automated axis locks unlock all three axes on power-on and relock on power-off, so the gimbal goes from bag to filming in about a second.
Two options make up the range: the standard RS 4 Mini at £339, and the Combo at £419, which adds the RS Intelligent Tracking Module and a redesigned briefcase handle.
Standard or Combo: Which to Choose
| Model | What's Included | Best For | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| RS 4 Mini | Gimbal, tripod, quick-release plate, cables | Manual operation, lowest entry price | £339.00 |
| RS 4 Mini Combo | Adds Intelligent Tracking Module and briefcase handle | Solo filming and low-angle work | £419.00 |
The £80 difference buys subject tracking and a handle designed for low-angle shooting. If you film alone, that is usually the deciding factor. Call 01243 859444 if you want it talked through.
One Second Unlock
Auto axis locks were previously reserved for DJI's flagship gimbals. All three axes unlock automatically on power-on and lock again on power-off or sleep, removing the manual fumbling that costs a shot when something happens in front of you.
The upgraded storage design folds the axis arms flatter, and the gimbal can be secured for transport at the press of a button. For anyone moving between locations across a shoot day, that adds up.
Fastest Vertical Switch in the RS Series
Switching from horizontal to vertical takes around 10 seconds: release and press the single-side knob, remove the horizontal plate, rotate it 90 degrees, and tighten it back. Third-generation native vertical shooting means the footage is genuinely vertical rather than a crop, so social deliverables keep full resolution.
Three-Step Balancing
Every element below removes friction from setup:
- Adjust smoothly using Teflon interlayers, carried over from DJI's flagship gimbals, which cut friction during positioning
- Fine-tune to millimetre level with the new tilt axis knob, dialling in balance rather than nudging it
- Reposition quickly using three positioning slots on the upper quick-release plate, giving flexible mounting across different camera sizes and fast reattachment without losing balance
Camera and Smartphone Support
The 2kg payload accommodates mainstream mirrorless setups including the Sony A7 series with a 24-70mm F2.8 GM II, alongside lighter vlog cameras such as the Sony ZV series. Movement stays smooth even with a DJI Mic, fill light, or other accessories fitted.
The Phone Holder converts it to a smartphone stabiliser, which suits creators shooting on both a camera and a phone across the same job.
Wireless Control and Zoom
Bluetooth pairing lets the gimbal's record button start and stop recording on the camera or phone, removing the need for a cable release. Once paired, the camera reconnects automatically on the next use.
Zoom control supports Power Zoom with PZ lenses and Clear Image Zoom through the joystick, making one-handed operation practical during a moving shot.
Refined Interface
The touchscreen carries clearer icons and smoother navigation, with real-time gimbal status prompts and parameter adjustment through the front dial. An auto-lock function dims the screen to prevent accidental touches while still displaying the current gimbal and joystick modes, which also conserves battery.

How the RS 4 Mini Compares
The RS 4 Mini sits at the compact end of the Ronin range, built around portability and fast setup rather than maximum payload. Against the DJI RS 4, it trades 1kg of payload capacity for a smaller, lighter body and quicker vertical switching.
For heavier mirrorless and cinema configurations, the RS 4 Pro carries up to 4.5kg on carbon fibre axis arms. The newer RS 5 sits above the Mini with a 3kg payload and touchscreen subject selection.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the RS 4 Mini and the RS 4 Mini Combo?
Both share the same gimbal, payload, and features. The Combo adds the RS Intelligent Tracking Module for automatic subject tracking, and a briefcase handle for low-angle filming, for £80 more.
What payload does the RS 4 Mini support?
Up to 2kg, covering setups such as a Sony A7 series body with a 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens, or lighter vlog cameras including the Sony ZV series, with room for a microphone or fill light on top.
Can I use it with a smartphone?
Yes. The Phone Holder converts it to a smartphone stabiliser, which is useful if you shoot on both a camera and a phone.
How fast is the vertical switch?
Around 10 seconds. Release and press the single-side knob, remove the horizontal plate, rotate it 90 degrees, and tighten it back. Third-generation native vertical shooting means full resolution rather than a crop.
How far does the tracking module work?
Up to 10 metres, and it functions reliably in complex scenes including multi-person environments. If the subject leaves frame briefly, it reacquires and continues following.
Which cameras is it compatible with?
It supports mainstream mirrorless cameras from Canon, Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, and Fujifilm, within the 2kg payload. Call us with your exact body and lens and we will confirm before you order.
Does it come with a warranty?
Yes. All new, sealed DJI products from Drone Safe Store carry a full 24-month warranty.
