DJI O4 Air Unit Series: HD Digital Video Transmission for Custom FPV Builds
The DJI O4 Air Unit Series brings DJI's O4 transmission system to self-built FPV drones, replacing analogue video with an HD digital feed. Two units cover the range: the O4 Air Unit at 8.2 grams for lightweight and micro builds, and the O4 Air Unit Pro with a larger sensor, dual antennas, and 15km range for performance builds.
Both deliver 1080p/100fps live view with latency as low as 20ms, and a dedicated Racing Mode drops that to 15ms while supporting up to eight aircraft flying simultaneously.
Which O4 Air Unit Do You Need?

DJI O4 Air Unit: Lightweight Digital Transmission
At 8.2 grams and measuring 30 x 30 x 6mm, the O4 Air Unit fits builds where every gram counts, including 2-inch frames and smaller. The 30 x 30mm mounting hole pattern matches standard stack spacing, so it drops into most existing builds without modification.
A 1/2-inch CMOS sensor records 4K/60fps video at 12MP, across a 117.6° field of view. A single-antenna design keeps weight down while still delivering 10km maximum transmission range and a 60Mbps maximum bitrate.
23GB of built-in storage handles onboard recording, though note that microSD is not supported, so plan your footage offloading around the internal capacity.
DJI O4 Air Unit Pro: Larger Sensor, Longer Range
The O4 Air Unit Pro steps up to a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor recording 4K/120fps, giving both better low-light performance and genuine slow-motion capability in post. A 155° ultra-wide field of view produces the expansive, fast-feeling perspective FPV footage is known for.
10-bit D-Log M colour recording widens the margin for grading in post-production, useful for anyone cutting FPV footage into a broader edit. A dual-antenna design extends maximum transmission distance to 15km, with the system automatically switching to the most stable frequency.
Racing Mode: 15ms Latency, Eight Aircraft
Racing Mode fixes recording and transmission at 1080p/100fps and drops video latency to 15ms, the point at which control feels immediate rather than delayed. It supports up to eight aircraft racing simultaneously, and sets the channel to manual mode with Race Band frequency points compatible with analogue video transmission.
When flying alongside analogue racers, keep goggles at least one metre apart, select frequencies manually, and adjust transmission power to suit. Racing Mode requires DJI Goggles 3 or DJI Goggles N3.
Compatibility
The O4 Air Unit Series works with:
- Pair with DJI Goggles 3 or DJI Goggles N3, alongside the DJI FPV Remote Controller 3, for the current-generation setup
- Connect to DJI Goggles 2 or DJI Goggles Integra with the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, retaining use of existing kit
- Customise your OSD through Canvas Mode and Betaflight OSD settings, adjusting real-time data and layout to suit your flying
Modules, Spares and Accessories
The Pro is available as separate modules, useful for repairs after a crash or for builders wanting to replace one element rather than the whole unit:
- Replace transmission hardware with the O4 Air Unit Pro Transmission Module, £149.00
- Swap a damaged camera using the O4 Air Unit Pro Camera Module, £89.00
- Restore range with the O4 Air Unit Pro Antenna, offering strong anti-interference performance, £19.00
- Simplify wiring with the O4 Air Unit Pro 3-in-1 Cable, with power and signal cables colour-separated for quick connection, £9.00
- Control exposure in bright conditions with the Freewell O4 Air Unit Pro Filters, Standard Day 4 Pack, £49.99
The modular design is worth noting on its own. A crash that destroys a camera on an integrated unit means replacing everything; here it means an £89 part.
Building Around an O4 Air Unit
An air unit is one component of a build, not a complete aircraft. Alongside it you will need a frame, motors, ESCs, a flight controller, propellers, batteries, and a charger, plus compatible goggles and a controller.
We stock FPV frames, batteries, chargers, and propellers from iFlight, Gemfan, SpeedyBee, BetaFPV, and Flywoo, alongside the DJI transmission hardware. If you would rather not build from scratch, our prebuilt FPV drones arrive ready to fly.
Protect Your Build With Drone Safe Repair Refresh
Repair Refresh is our in-house protection plan, comprehensive accidental crash cover activated straight away and handled directly by our own team in Chichester. Cover applies to DJI aircraft rather than individual build components, so it is worth considering alongside any ready-to-fly DJI drone in your setup.
For a self-built FPV aircraft, the modular O4 Air Unit Pro offers its own form of protection, since a crash usually means replacing a single module rather than the complete unit.
UK Flight Requirements
The air unit itself is a component, not an aircraft, so registration depends entirely on the drone you fit it to. From 1 January 2026, UK rules require both a Flyer ID and an Operator ID to fly any drone weighing 100g or more that has a camera. Nearly all FPV builds fall into this category.
Because FPV is flown immersively through goggles, UK rules also require a competent spotter to maintain direct visual line of sight with the aircraft at all times during goggle flight. Weigh your completed build to confirm its category, and confirm current requirements against the CAA's Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Service before flying, as rules continue to change.
What Works Well With the O4 Air Unit Series
- DJI Goggles 3, the current-generation headset with Real View PiP and a Micro-OLED display, £579.00
- DJI FPV Remote Controller 3, the matching controller for the O4 system, £139.00
- DJI Avata 2, if you want a ready-to-fly FPV aircraft alongside your builds
- DJI Avata 360, for 360° FPV capture with reframing in post

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the O4 Air Unit and the O4 Air Unit Pro?
The standard O4 Air Unit uses a 1/2-inch sensor at 4K/60fps with a 117.6° field of view, a single antenna, and 10km range, weighing 8.2 grams. The Pro steps up to a 1/1.3-inch sensor at 4K/120fps, a 155° field of view, 10-bit D-Log M colour, dual antennas, and 15km range.
Which frames does the O4 Air Unit fit?
The standard unit has a 30 x 30mm mounting hole pattern and a height of 6mm, fitting 2-inch frames and smaller as well as larger builds. Call us if you want compatibility confirmed against a specific frame before ordering.
Which goggles do I need?
The series works with DJI Goggles 3, DJI Goggles N3, and the DJI FPV Remote Controller 3. It also supports DJI Goggles 2 and DJI Goggles Integra with the FPV Remote Controller 2. Racing Mode specifically requires Goggles 3 or Goggles N3.
Can I use a microSD card with the O4 Air Unit?
No. The O4 Air Unit uses 23GB of built-in storage and does not support microSD, so plan footage offloading around the internal capacity.
No. The O4 Air Unit uses 23GB of built-in storage and does not support microSD, so plan footage offloading around the internal capacity.
What is Racing Mode?
Racing Mode fixes recording and transmission at 1080p/100fps and reduces video latency to 15ms, supporting up to eight aircraft flying simultaneously on Race Band frequencies. It requires DJI Goggles 3 or Goggles N3.
Do I need to register a self-built FPV drone?
Almost certainly. Since 1 January 2026, any camera drone weighing 100g or more requires both a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. Goggle flight also requires a competent spotter maintaining direct visual line of sight at all times.
Can I replace just the camera if I crash?
Yes, on the Pro. The O4 Air Unit Pro is available as separate camera and transmission modules, so a damaged camera costs £89 rather than replacing the complete unit.
Does it come with a warranty?
Yes. All new, sealed DJI products from Drone Safe Store carry a 24-month warranty. For accidental damage cover on a complete DJI aircraft, add DJI Care Refresh or our own Drone Safe Repair Refresh, handled directly by our Chichester team.
