DJI Air 3S: Dual-Camera 1-Inch Sensor Drone With 45-Minute Flight Time

The DJI Air 3S pairs a 50MP 1-inch CMOS primary camera with a 48MP 70mm medium telephoto camera, giving two genuine focal lengths on one airframe rather than a digital crop. Up to 14 stops of dynamic range hold detail across bright sky and shadowed ground, and 45 minutes of flight time allows scouting, composing, and reshooting within a single battery.

It is also the first DJI drone with forward-facing LiDAR, enabling Nightscape omnidirectional obstacle sensing that works after dark, where most drones lose their safety net.

Two Cameras, Two Real Focal Lengths

The 50MP 1-inch CMOS primary camera with a 24mm lens captures wide, detailed landscapes, recording 4K/60fps HDR and 4K/120fps video with 10-bit D-Log M colour. The larger sensor preserves fine detail in low light, which is what separates a usable sunset or nightscape shot from a noisy one.

The 70mm medium telephoto camera uses a 48MP 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor with matching video specifications and colour profiles, so footage from both cameras cuts together without colour grading around a mismatch. Its 3x optical zoom compresses depth of field, producing the flattened, cinematic look that suits portraits and vehicle shots.

Free Panorama mode runs on both cameras, stitching multiple images around a manually selected subject or area. The wide camera covers more ground per pass, while the telephoto reduces distortion for cleaner detail across the final frame.

Nightscape Sensing and Smart Return to Home

Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems use six vision sensors, two each at the front, rear, and bottom, alongside downward infrared time-of-flight sensing. Forward-facing LiDAR, a first on a DJI consumer drone, extends obstacle detection into low light, so the aircraft avoids buildings and structures during both flight and return in conditions where vision sensors alone would fail.

Next-generation Smart Return to Home uses real-time vision positioning and map-building, memorising flight paths where lighting allows. That produces reliable returns from complex locations rather than a straight-line route into whatever sits between the aircraft and home.

Flight, Transmission and Shooting Tools

Every specification below carries a practical benefit:

  • Fly up to 45 minutes per battery, giving time to scout a location, compose, and reshoot rather than rushing a single pass
  • Transmit up to 20km at 1080p/60fps with DJI O4, holding a clear, responsive live feed across open landscapes
  • Hold focus automatically with Subject Focusing, keeping a moving or off-centre subject sharp while you concentrate on camera movement
  • Shoot 2.7K true vertical video, producing social-ready footage without cropping a horizontal frame
  • Capture 50MP stills on the primary camera, retaining detail for large prints or heavy cropping
  • Automate cinematic moves with MasterShots, QuickShots, and Hyperlapse, producing polished results without manual flying

Which Package Should You Buy?

The Air 3S (RC-N3) at £911.05 is the entry point, pairing the aircraft with the RC-N3 controller, which uses your own phone as the screen, and a single battery.

The Fly More Combo (RC-N3) at £1,150 adds two extra batteries, a charging hub, and a bag. Three batteries takes a shoot from one 45-minute window to a genuine half-day, and the RC-N3 keeps the cost down for anyone happy to fly with a phone.

The Fly More Combo (RC 2) at £1,299 is the package most buyers choose. It swaps in the RC 2 controller with its own bright built-in screen, removing any dependence on a phone battery, notifications, or connection.

Protect Your Air 3S: Repair Refresh or DJI Care Refresh

Both options cover accidental damage that a standard warranty does not. The difference comes down to how claims are handled and how many you expect to make.

Drone Safe Repair Refresh, £119.00
Our own in-house plan, offering comprehensive accidental crash cover activated straight away, with repairs handled directly by our engineers here in Chichester rather than routed through DJI.

DJI Care Refresh 1 Year, £99.00
DJI's own plan, providing 2 low-cost replacements across 12 months, covering flyaway, water damage, and collision.

DJI Care Refresh 2 Year, £165.00
The same DJI cover extended to 24 months with 4 low-cost replacements, the strongest option for anyone flying regularly over a longer period.

Both are digital codes, applied at purchase. Call us if you want help choosing between them.

Servicing and Aftercare

Beyond crash cover, we service drones in-house. Our Medium Drone Service covers a full flight test report and battery health analysis, worth considering before a significant trip or after a heavy season of flying. Full servicing and repair options are listed under DJI Drone Repair and Servicing.

UK Flight Requirements

The Air 3S sits well above the 250g threshold, so full registration applies. You will need both a Flyer ID, earned by passing the CAA's free online theory test and valid for five years, and an Operator ID, a low-cost annual registration, before flying outdoors.

Its weight also places it outside the A1 category, meaning it cannot be flown as close to uninvolved people as a sub-250g drone. Pilots wanting to fly closer to people in built-up areas should consider the A2 Certificate of Competency. Confirm current requirements against the CAA's Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Service before flying, as rules continue to change.

How the Air 3S Compares

The Air 3S sits in the middle of DJI's consumer range, above the Mini line and below the Mavic flagship. Against the Mini 5 Pro, it adds a second genuine telephoto camera, longer flight time, and 20km transmission, at the cost of the sub-250g weight advantage and the A1 flying privileges that come with it.

Against the Mavic 4 Pro, the Air 3S comes in considerably lower on price while retaining a 1-inch primary sensor and dual cameras. Against the earlier Air 3, the 3S upgrades the primary sensor from 1/1.3-inch to a full 1-inch, adds forward LiDAR for night sensing, and improves Smart RTH.

Choose the Mini 5 Pro if portability and flying near people matter most. Choose the Air 3S if image quality and the second focal length matter more than weight.

Training and Certification

Flying commercially, or wanting to operate closer to people and structures, generally requires certification beyond registration. Our A2CofC Online Training Course covers close-proximity flight in the Open category, and the GVC Course is the route to an Operational Authorisation. 1-1 in-person training is available if you would rather learn on the aircraft directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a licence to fly the DJI Air 3S in the UK?

Yes. The Air 3S is well over 250g, so it requires both a Flyer ID and an Operator ID before outdoor flight. The Flyer ID is free via the CAA's online test; the Operator ID is a low-cost annual registration. Its weight also means it cannot be flown as close to uninvolved people as a sub-250g drone.

What is the difference between the two cameras?

The primary camera uses a 50MP 1-inch CMOS sensor with a 24mm lens for wide, detailed landscapes. The medium telephoto uses a 48MP 1/1.3-inch sensor at 70mm, giving 3x optical zoom and compressed depth of field for portraits and vehicle shots. Both share video specifications and colour profiles, so footage cuts together cleanly.

What is the difference between the RC-N3 and RC 2 controllers?

The RC-N3 uses your own phone as the screen, keeping the price lower. The RC 2 has its own bright built-in screen, removing any dependence on a phone. Most buyers prefer the RC 2, which is why the Fly More Combo (RC 2) is the most popular package.

Can the Air 3S fly safely at night?

It is better equipped for it than most. Forward-facing LiDAR, a first on a DJI consumer drone, enables Nightscape omnidirectional obstacle sensing that continues working in low light, and the 1-inch sensor produces cleaner low-light footage. Standard UK night-flying rules still apply.

How long does the Air 3S fly on one battery?

Up to 45 minutes under DJI's test conditions. Real-world UK flying with wind and active shooting reduces this, which is why the three-battery Fly More Combos are the practical choice.

Should I buy Repair Refresh or DJI Care Refresh?

Repair Refresh at £119 is our in-house plan, with comprehensive accidental crash cover handled directly by our Chichester team and activated immediately. DJI Care Refresh is DJI's own plan at £99 for one year, offering 2 low-cost replacements, or £165 for two years with 4 replacements. Call us and we will explain which suits how you fly.

Do I need ND filters?

For video, they make a real difference. ND filters slow the shutter speed in bright conditions, producing natural motion blur rather than the stuttering look of an over-fast shutter. The Air 3S ND Filter Set covers ND8, ND32, and ND128 at £79.

Does it come with a warranty?

Yes. All new, sealed DJI products from Drone Safe Store carry a 24-month warranty. For accidental damage cover, add DJI Care Refresh or our own Drone Safe Repair Refresh, handled directly by our Chichester team.
