A2CofC + GVC Course Training Package (E-Learning)
Two CAA qualifications in one package: the A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) for Near People (A2) flying in the Open Category, and the General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) for Specific Category work under a PDRA01 Operational Authorisation. Both certificates are valid for five years from issue. Course content reflects the UK drone rules in force since 1 January 2026, including UK class marks, Remote ID and the 100g Flyer ID threshold.
Study at your own pace online and sit the theory exams at any hour, with mock exams included. Your access code is emailed as soon as your order is processed.
Today, you can learn online at your own speed with access to the final test around the clock.
Complete Your GVC Before 31 December 2027
The CAA will stop issuing the GVC on 31 December 2027, after which only the Level 1, 2 and 3 Remote Pilot Certificates (RPC-L1, L2, L3) will be available. GVCs already issued remain acceptable until they expire, wherever the Operational Authorisation lists the GVC as valid evidence of competence. Holding a valid GVC also exempts you from the RPC-L1 theory test.
Course contents include:
Meteorology & Planning
UK Air Law & Responsibilities
Drone Flight Performance & Operations
Drone Operating Principles
Benefits of the GVC
- Qualify for a PDRA01 Operational Authorisation, covering rotary and fixed-wing aircraft from 250g to 25kg.
- Deploy into residential, commercial, industrial and recreational areas that the A3 sub-category restricts to a 150m standoff.
- Work within 50m of uninvolved people in flight, reducing to 30m during take-off and landing.
- Scale up to enterprise airframes such as the Matrice 4 Series and Matrice 400 for inspection, survey and public safety tasks.
- Progress towards RPC-L2 and beyond, with the RPC-L1 theory test waived while your GVC remains valid.
Benefits of the A2CofC
- Fly UK2 class-marked drones (and EU C2 drones until 31 December 2027) weighing up to 4kg within 30m of uninvolved people, reducing to 5m in low-speed mode.
- Operate legacy drones under 2kg in the Near People (A2) sub-category, keeping 50m from uninvolved people.
- Capture roof, façade and property imagery in built-up areas that the A3 sub-category would place off-limits.
- Retain the qualification for five years, with no minimum age requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Flyer ID before starting?
Yes. Anyone flying a drone of 100g or more must pass the free CAA Flyer ID test, and it is an entry condition for both the A2 CofC and the GVC.
Is the GVC being withdrawn?
The CAA stops issuing the GVC on 31 December 2027. Certificates issued before then remain acceptable until expiry wherever the Operational Authorisation accepts a GVC, and a valid GVC exempts you from the RPC-L1 theory test.
Can I fly commercially with the GVC alone?
No. The GVC proves competence; you also need a Specific Category Operational Authorisation, most commonly the PDRA01, before flying under Specific Category conditions.
Can I still fly my older, non-class-marked drone near people?
Legacy drones under 2kg can fly in the Near People (A2) sub-category with an A2 CofC, keeping 50m from uninvolved people. The closer-flying allowance for 250g to 500g legacy drones ended on 1 January 2026. Legacy drones over 2kg are limited to the A3 sub-category or the Specific Category.
Does my drone need Remote ID?
UK1, UK2, UK3, UK5 and UK6 class-marked drones must broadcast Remote ID now. Legacy and home-built drones of 100g or more with a camera must do so from 1 January 2028.
Can I fly at night?
Yes, provided a green flashing light is switched on. If your aircraft has no built-in green light, fit one; its weight counts towards the aircraft's total mass.
How long do the certificates last?
The A2 CofC and GVC are each valid for five years from issue.
