DJI Osmo Action 6: Variable Aperture and a 1/1.1-Inch Square Sensor
The Osmo Action 6 is DJI's first action camera with a variable aperture, adjustable from f/2.0 to f/4.0. Opening to f/2.0 pulls in significantly more light for night and indoor work, while stopping down to f/4.0 controls exposure in bright daylight without stacking ND filters.
Behind it sits an all-new 1/1.1-inch square CMOS sensor with 2.4μm pixels, delivering up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range and 4K/120fps recording in 4:3.

Both include free gifts and are in stock now. The £86 difference buys two extra batteries, the charging case, and the extension rod, which together cost more than that bought separately. For anyone filming a full day out, the Adventure Combo is the better value.

The Variable Aperture
Fixed-aperture action cameras force you to control exposure with shutter speed or filters. The Action 6 changes the aperture itself:
- Open to f/2.0 for genuinely usable low-light and night footage, gathering far more light than a fixed lens
- Stop down to f/4.0 in bright sun to hold a natural shutter speed without fitting an ND filter
- Switch automatically using Auto Aperture Mode, letting the camera adapt as conditions change mid-shot
The Square Sensor and 4K Custom Mode
The 1/1.1-inch square sensor captures a taller frame than a conventional sensor, which is what enables 4K Custom mode: shoot once, then crop to 16:9, 9:16, or 4:3 afterwards without losing resolution.
For anyone publishing to both YouTube and vertical social, that removes the choice between two separate shoots or a heavy crop.
Recording covers 4K/120fps in 4:3, 4K/60fps in 4K Custom and HorizonSteady modes, and up to 8K/30fps in Normal Video. Note that 8K is restricted to 16:9, with limited stabilisation and FOV options.
Low Light and Night
- Shoot in SuperNight mode at up to 4K/60fps, combining the larger sensor, wider aperture, and new noise reduction for clean footage after dark
- Add Starburst mode to turn point light sources into defined star shapes, useful for city night footage
- Capture around 40MP stills, retaining detail for cropping or print
Stabilisation, Audio and Control
- Stabilise with RockSteady, RockSteady+, and in-camera 4K HorizonSteady, keeping the horizon level through rolls and rough terrain
- Record stereo audio through the three-mic array, with noise reduction cutting wind on fast-moving shots
- Connect two DJI microphone transmitters directly via OsmoAudio, capturing two people without a receiver
- Track subjects automatically, keeping a moving subject centred during high-speed action
- Start and stop recording with Gesture Control, without reaching for the camera
- Frame vertically using Portrait mode, and reach further with 2x lossless zoom
Built for Cold and Water
Waterproof to 20 metres with no case at all, extending to 60 metres with the Waterproof Case. A built-in colour temperature sensor corrects underwater colour, and a water pressure gauge records dive data alongside the footage.
Cold resistance and a four-hour battery life cover ski and snowboard days where most cameras shut down early. Storage runs to 50GB internally plus a microSD slot supporting cards up to 1TB.

Action 6 or Action 5 Pro?
Choose the Action 6 for the variable aperture, the larger square sensor, 4K Custom mode, in-camera 4K HorizonSteady, and 50GB of internal storage.
Choose the Action 5 Pro if the budget matters more than the newest sensor. It remains a capable camera and sits below the Action 6 on price.
The Osmo Nano is worth a look if size is the priority, and the Osmo 360 if you want full spherical capture with reframing in post.
What Works Well With the Action 6
- DJI Mic Mini 2 or Mic 3, connecting directly via OsmoAudio with no receiver needed
- High-speed microSD cards, supporting cards up to 1TB for 8K and 4K/120fps
- Freewell filters, for the wider filter range
- DJI Osmo Mobile 8, if you shoot on a phone alongside the action camera

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the variable aperture actually do?
It adjusts how much light reaches the sensor. f/2.0 gathers far more light for night and indoor shooting, while f/4.0 controls exposure in bright sun without fitting an ND filter. No other DJI action camera offers this.
What is 4K Custom mode?
The square sensor captures a taller frame than needed, so you shoot once and crop afterwards to 16:9, 9:16, or 4:3 without losing resolution. Useful if you publish to both YouTube and vertical social.
How deep can it go underwater?
20 metres with no case at all, and 60 metres with the Waterproof Case. A colour temperature sensor corrects underwater colour and a pressure gauge logs dive data.
Standard or Adventure Combo?
The Adventure Combo adds two extra Extreme Batteries, the multifunctional battery case, and a 1.5m extension rod for £86 more. Bought separately those cost considerably more, so it is the better value for full-day shooting.
Do I need a memory card?
Not immediately. 50GB of internal storage is built in. A microSD card up to 1TB is worth adding for 8K or 4K/120fps, which fill space quickly.
Can I connect a microphone without a receiver?
Yes. OsmoAudio connects two DJI microphone transmitters directly to the camera, capturing two people without carrying a receiver.
How does it compare to the Action 5 Pro?
The Action 6 adds the variable aperture, a larger 1/1.1-inch square sensor, 4K Custom mode, in-camera 4K HorizonSteady, and 50GB of storage. The Action 5 Pro remains a strong option at a lower price.
Does it come with a warranty?
Yes. All new, sealed DJI products from Drone Safe Store carry a full 24-month warranty.
